Step 2: Search Courses & Register for Classes

Next, review your course offerings and schedule your advising appointment. Be sure all transcripts and test scores are submitted before meeting with an advisor to ensure proper course placement.

Step 4: Attend a New Student Orientation

Your final step is to attend a new student orientation event to ensure you are prepared for your first day of classes. Orientation helps returning students prepare by introducing them to the college’s resources, expectations, campus technology, campus tours and more.

Step 5: Access Your Student Email, D2L, and Access Course Materials

After attending New Student Orientation, your final step before classes begin is to ensure you can access all of your student resources. Be sure you can log in to your Volmail account, access the D2L online learning platform, and order any required textbooks and course materials.

Yes! Adult learners at John A. Logan College are the norm, rather than the exception. The average JALC student age is 24 years old and the majority of our students attend part time.

Our staff is here to assist you! Having an end goal in mind is a great starting point for prospective students on the fence about returning to college and we can help you decide that end goal! Take some time to explore careers and connect with our Academic Advisor who specializes in meeting with undecided students. Our staff is committed to helping you prepare for career options that match your individual skills, values, interests, and goals.

Additionally the Career Readiness staff are here to help you with further career readiness services, resources, and access to information about careers, apprenticeships, internships, and more. Our staff assist in resume building, cover letters, and interview skills.

John A. Logan College recognizes that learning happens both inside and outside the classroom. Students can earn college credit for the knowledge and skills gained through work experience, military service, advanced placement, and other non-traditional learning. This opportunity can save you time and money while helping you reach your educational and career goals faster.

Students requesting prior learning credit must be enrolled at John A. Logan College. All prior learning credit(s) awarded will not carry a grade or grade points and are not included in the student’s cumulative grade point average (GPA). John A. Logan College will not accept prior learning credit(s) from other institutions. Students may not exceed 30 hours of combined prior learning. We offer several short-term certificate programs that can be completed in a year or less. All of our programs of study, including degree and certificate programs feature detailed program information that outline exactly which courses—and how many credits—are needed to achieve your goal.

John A. Logan College offers an affordable education, with tuition rates for the 2025–2026 academic year starting at $145 per credit hour for in-district students. More tuition information can be found on our admissions tuition and fees page.

We encourage all students to apply for financial aid. Our financial aid office can walk you through the various ways to pay for college, including grants and scholarships, and work study. Your employer may also offer tuition assistance.

We strive to meet our students where they are at and support them along their academic journey! Our Student Affairs division include teams dedicated to Admissions, Recruitment, Academic Advisement, Tutoring, Mental Health, Disability Support Services, Student Clubs and Organizations, and More! We even have a dedicated Student Success Navigator to help students with internal and external student resources!

We have a Child Care Resource Referral Center at JALC that has dedicated staff helping improve childcare accessibility, affordability, and quality of child care, by working together, with families, providers, and communities. Additionally the Community Education department offers youth and family programs and summer camps.

We offer several flexible options, including individual online classes, hybrid, and fast track courses. We encourage students to meet with an academic advisor to explore course offering schedules. View our Fast Track options.

We offer phone or in-person appointment for Academic Advisement.
