Definitions for Types of complaints for the Report a Concern Form.

Current JALC Student

Related to classroom or instructional issues, such as:

  • Grade Appeals – Disputes regarding final course grades or grading procedures
  • Course Information – Issues with the accuracy, accessibility, or clarity of course materials and expectations
  • Faculty Communication – Concerns about response times, clarity in instruction, or availability of faculty
  • Faculty Performance – Complaints regarding teaching effectiveness, professionalism, or adherence to syllabus guidelines

College-related concerns outside the classroom, including:

  • Student Services – Issues with advising, financial aid, student activities, or other campus resources
  • Policy Violations – Alleged breaches or misapplications of College policies
  • Student to Student Complaints – Grievances by one student against another, typically involving allegations of misconduct, harassment, or behavior that violates the College’s code of conduct.
  • General Campus Concerns – Complaints about facilities, campus safety, or interactions with staff

Potential violations of civil rights laws or policies, including:

  • ADA Compliance – Accessibility concerns or failure to provide reasonable accommodations
  • Sex-Based Misconduct – Sexual harassment, assault, or gender-based discrimination

  • Discrimination and Harassment – Based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, disability, or other protected categories

JALC Employee

  • Missed Assignments
    • Submitting assignments days or weeks after the deadline without prior communication
    • Frequently requesting deadline extensions but still failing to turn in work
    • Completing in-class activities but not turning them in for credit
    • Ignoring or not responding to instructor emails or reminders about missing work
    • Failing to submit major projects or research papers that heavily impact the final grade
    • Turning in incomplete work that does not meet assignment requirements
  • Low Grades
    • Repeatedly scoring below average or below passing on quizzes, tests and/or exams
    • Performing poorly on assignments due to lack of effort, misunderstanding instructions, or rushing through the work
    • Scoring well on homework but failing tests
    • Receiving consistently low marks on essays or reports due to weak writing, lack of analysis, or missing key elements
    • Failing to demonstrate improvement despite feedback and opportunities for revision
    • Performing well in class discussions but struggling on written or multiple-choice assessments
    • Performance is declining over time despite previous success
  • Frequent Absences
    • Missing multiple classes without explanation
    • Sporadic attendance with no clear pattern
    • Extended absences without notifying the instructor
    • Chronic absenteeism affecting academic performance
  • Tardiness and Leaving Early
    • Consistently arriving late to class
    • Frequently leaving before class ends
    • Disrupting the learning environment when entering/exiting
    • Providing excuses that do not align with attendance policies
  • Unverified or Excessive Excuses (Retention Alert to Advisor)
    • Repeatedly claiming illness or personal emergencies
    • Providing vague or questionable reasons for missing class
    • Asking for last-minute deadline extensions due to absences
    • Using family, work, or travel as frequent justification
  • Disruptive Behavior
  • Talking during lectures or group discussions
  • Frequent interruptions or speaking out of turn
  • Using phones or other devices inappropriately
  • Making distracting noises (tapping, whispering, etc.)
  • Side conversations that disrupt learning
  • Disrespectful or Inappropriate Behavior
    • Challenging the instructor or classmates in a hostile manner
    • Dismissive or rude comments towards others
    • Inappropriate language or gestures
    • Ignoring instructions or refusing to follow class policies
    • Demeaning or mocking other students’ contributions
  • Lack of Engagement or Participation Issues
    • Sleeping during class
    • Arriving late or leaving early without valid reasons
    • Refusing to participate in discussions or activities
    • Constantly asking unrelated or off-topic questions
  • Excessive Dependency on Instructor
    • Repeatedly asking the same questions without applying feedback
    • Expecting the instructor to provide answers instead of guidance
    • Over-relying on office hours instead of independent effort
  • Technology Misuse
    • Browsing unrelated websites during class
    • Playing games or watching videos on devices
    • Texting or taking calls during instruction
