Campus Safety

The College is committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment. View important information on campus closings, emergency procedures, and police services.

Should campus need to close due to inclement weather, an emergency, or any other significant disruption, one of three types of closures will be utilized:

  1. Class Cancellation
    • In-person academic activities are suspended.
    • Online instruction may continue at the discretion of faculty and academic leadership.
    • Students are not required to be physically present on campus.
  2. Suspended Operations
    • All non-essential campus offices are closed.
    • In-person academic activities are suspended.
    • Online instruction may continue at the discretion of faculty and academic leadership.
    • Students are not required to be physically present on campus.
  3. Total Closure
    • All classes (in-person and online) and operations are suspended.
    • No personnel are permitted on campus except emergency responders.
    • Closure is declared by the President or designee in accordance with Board Policy 3250.

Visit the JALCAlert website to setup your account to ensure you receive all communications from the College regarding campus closures. Campus closings will also be announced by email through college-provided Volmail accounts, the college website, and public announcements.

The Campus Police Department (CPD) consists of law enforcement officers and security officers who patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year to ensure a safe atmosphere for the college community.

In addition to patrolling campus, the CPD is responsible for several other services, including but not limited to:

  • Providing  jump starts and unlocking vehicles
  • Escorting students upon request
  • Managing the Lost and Found
  • Providing emergency response services
  • Conducting accident and criminal investigations concerning on campus crimes
  • Publishing crime data

The College President may declare a state of emergency when a situation poses a significant threat to the safety, security, or normal operations of the College. The College maintains emergency preparedness plans and resources to respond quickly and effectively should such situations arise.

Examples of emergencies may include severe weather, fire, hazardous material incidents, campus violence or threats, civil disturbances, utility failures, public health emergencies, or other conditions that endanger people or disrupt college operations.

When a state of emergency is declared:

  • Students will be notified through official college communication channels (text alerts through JALCAlert, email through their college-provided Volmail account, the college website, and public announcements. Visit the JALCAlert website to setup your account to ensure you receive all communications from the College regarding emergency situations.
  • The College may close, transition to remote learning, cancel events, or limit access to campus facilities until it is safe to resume normal activities.
  • Students are expected to follow all instructions from college officials and emergency personnel, including evacuation orders, shelter-in-place directions, or other safety measures.
  • The priority during a state of emergency is the health and safety of students, employees, and visitors.

If you misplace something on campus, the Campus Police Department is available to help. They manage the Lost and Found and work to return lost items to their owners whenever possible.

  • Turning in Lost Items: If you find an item on campus, bring it to Campus Police. It will be recorded in the Lost and Found Log with the date and location where it was found. Campus Police will make every effort to contact the owner and return the item.
  • Reporting a Lost Item: If you lose something, report it to Campus Police. They will check the Lost and Found Log to see if it has been turned in. If not, your information and a description of the item will be added to the log in case it is found later.
  • Storage of Items: Unclaimed items are stored in a secure cabinet in the Campus Police Department. Items are kept for 30 days. Items valued at more than $100 will be published on the JALC website to increase the possibility of identification and retrieval.
  • Disposal of Unclaimed Items: After 30 days, unclaimed items will be disposed of appropriately. A record of the disposal is kept on file by Campus Police.

John A. Logan College shares its campus with Mary Logan Alternative High School and hosts dual credit high school students. In accordance with Illinois law (720 ILCS 5/11- 9.3), registered sex offenders who have committed offenses against minors are prohibited from being present on school grounds or in proximity to minors unless specific legal exceptions apply. As such, any student or employee who is a registered sex offender and whose offense involved a minor shall be barred from physical presence on campus. This restriction includes all buildings, parking lots, and outdoor areas where minors may be present.

Students who are registered sex offenders are responsible for complying with all applicable state laws and institutional safety policies. This includes registering in person with the John A. Logan College Campus Police Department within three days of the start of each semester and providing accurate, up-to-date information such as name, address, place of enrollment, and any other required details.
