The Foreigner
O'Neil Auditorium JALC 2025 FALL PLAY – Performances are 11/14 10 a.m. Matinee & 7p.m. 11/15 7 p.m. and 11/16 2p.m.
Tickets can be purchased at the GENERAL Store. Tickets are general admission $10 / $5 Students & Seniors. Box office will open 1 hour before each performance. Doors open 30 minutes prior to performance.
Directed by JALC Distinguished Alumnus Ryan Patrick
The Foreigner (PG13) is a 1984 two-act comedy by American playwright Larry Shue.
The play has become a staple of professional and amateur theatre. The Foreigner has earned two Obie Awards and two Outer Critics Circle Awards as Best New American Play and Best Off-Broadway Production.
Ben Brantley, of The New York Times, described it as a deliberately doltish comedy of improbabilities.
An inspired comic romp, equal in inventive hilarity to the authorโs classic comedy The Nerd.
Based on what the New York Post describes as a โdevilishly clever idea,โ the play demonstrates what can happen when a group of devious characters must deal with a stranger who (they think) knows no English.
โI laughed start to finish at one comic surprise after another.โ โThe New Yorker.
โโฆa constant invitation to relax and laugh at the foolishness of lifeโฆโ โVillage Voice.
โShueโs comedy is positively antic, yet pleasantly seasoned with a few dashes of sentimentalityโฆHe has raided comedyโs storehouseโฆโ โBergen Record.
For more information, please contact Chris.Thorton@jalc.edu or call (618) 985-2828, Ext.8033.

THE STORY: The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by โFroggyโ LeSueur, a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time โFroggyโ has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So โFroggy,โ before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he shouldโthe evil plans of a sinister, two-faced minister and his redneck associate; the fact that the ministerโs pretty fiancรฉe is pregnant; and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesnโt understand a word being said. That he does fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play and sets up the wildly funny climax in which things go uproariously awry for the โbad guys,โ and the โgood guysโ emerge triumphant.
Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play.
