JALC employees and community members interact and wait in line for food at the Martin Luther King Celebration.

John A. Logan College will host its third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Breakfast on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, from 8 to 10 a.m. in the John A. Logan College Conference Center.

The free community event is open to the public. Attendees are strongly encouraged to RSVP by Thursday, Jan. 14.

Individuals may RSVP online, contact Cordy Love at 618-985-2828 ext. 8586, or email cordy.love@jalc.edu.

The annual breakfast honors the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., celebrating his ideals, dreams, and enduring commitment to peace, justice, and love. The college hosts the event the day after the national holiday to allow more John A. Logan College students to attend.

“As a commuter campus, we want to ensure that our students have the opportunity to engage in events within their communities on MLK Day while still being able to attend this important event on a day when classes are in session,” said Dr. Kirk Overstreet, president of John A. Logan College.

In addition to the Breakfast the College is sponsoring a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Beloved Community Donation Drive. Organizers will collect the following items and accept donations at the Conference Center on Jan. 20: new or gently used books for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Southern Illinois. Youth hats and gloves for Connect360, and hygiene items for the unhoused for Carbondale United.

This year’s keynote speakers will be Jeff McGoy, vice president of student affairs at Shawnee Community College, and Dr. Jamal Randy Allen Rasheed. Rasheed holds a doctorate in African American ministry and is recognized for his leadership and advocacy in higher education.
