John A. Logan College Officials were joined by project partners on Tuesday, November 25 for a ceremonial groundbreaking for the West Lobby (Logan Hall) expansion project.

The ground may have already been broken, but John A. Logan College officials gathered Tuesday evening to ceremonially kick off a major construction project that will redefine the College’s primary entrance and create a modern, expanded hub for students and visitors.

The West Lobby and Logan Hall expansion will add more than 6,000 square feet to the College’s existing footprint, delivering a completely renewed entrance featuring a contemporary gathering and event space. This enlarged lobby will also support gymnasium traffic, and new offices for Community Education, the John A. Logan College Foundation, a Welcome Area, and a Board and Meeting Room.

Designed by BHDG Architects, the project will introduce a light-filled, modern space that will serve as a clear focal point for the campus. The design incorporates sustainable elements and flexible interior spaces intended to support student engagement, streamline visitor services, and improve College operations.

The State of Illinois partially funds the $6 million project. Fager-McGee is serving as the general contractor. Originally scheduled to begin in early 2026, construction was moved up when the contractor had an opening, and the Illinois Capital Development Board approved an accelerated start. Demolition work began on November 17, with completion expected in May 2027.

“Thanks to the close coordination of our partners, work is getting underway, positioning us to deliver improvements sooner,” said JALC President Dr. Kirk Overstreet. “This project represents a major investment in access, experience, and community connection.”

During construction, the front entrance to the West Lobby will be closed, and the lobby itself will close on December 15. The Donald L. Brewer Gymnasium will remain open, but attendees at home men’s and women’s basketball games will need to use the North Entrance. Updated campus maps and wayfinding signage have been placed throughout the construction zone to guide students, staff, and visitors.

In closing, Overstreet noted that while construction may temporarily shift how people navigate campus, the long-term benefits will be transformative.

“We may be closing one door today, but we are opening a better door to the future,” Overstreet said. “Together, we’re building a front door that reflects who we are and where we’re going—an inclusive College that welcomes the community, supports student success, and inspires pride.
