John A. Logan College will host its fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 18, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the College campus. The event will feature food, live entertainment, special guests, and a community gathering to honor the significance of Juneteenth.

The celebration will begin at 3 p.m. with welcoming remarks from several distinguished speakers, including Carbondale Mayor Caroline Harvey, former Congressman and current JALC Board of Trustees member Dr. Glenn Poshard, and JALC President Dr. Kirk Overstreet.

This year’s celebration will include live music from the J Sound Band and a special vocal performance by Matt Wilson. Food vendors Smokin’ K’s BBQ and Honeybeez Snowballz will also be available, along with art vendors, storytelling, poetry, and a raffle. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets for comfort during the festivities.

President Overstreet noted that the start time was adjusted this year to encourage greater participation from students and staff.

“We have set this event for the eighteenth the past couple of years because we do not want to conflict with other community events,” said Overstreet. “We decided this year to move the event up in the evening to allow more of our students and staff to participate.”

Live music and food service are expected to begin around 3:30 p.m., following the opening remarks.

The Juneteenth Celebration at JALC is open to the public, and all are welcome to attend and take part in the College’s commemoration of emancipation and African American freedom.
