Tyler Smithpeters Has Been Named the College’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach

Published on June 6, 2022

John A. Logan College is excited to announce that Tyler Smithpeters has been named the College’s seventh Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Smithpeters has spent the past four years as an assistant at the College under Coach Kyle Smithpeters. During his time as an assistant, the program has gone 102-19 with three consecutive Region 24 titles and produced two of the last three National Players of the Year.

A native of Harrisburg, Smithpeters led his team to a state title and a 33-1 record in 2013. He went on to play four years at Southern Illinois University, where he was named the Missouri Valley Conference Sixth Man of the Year and MVC All-Bench Team Captain in 2018.

John A. Logan College Athletic Director Greg Starrick believes Smithpeters is the right person to continue the program’s recent success.

“As an assistant coach, Tyler has demonstrated high levels of loyalty and consistently strong work ethic,” said Starrick. “ In addition, he possesses a proven ability to recruit and develop players at the JUCO level. After talking with Tyler and hearing his vision for the program moving forward, I believe Tyler Smithpeters is the best choice to continue the success of the tradition-rich basketball program at John A. Logan College.”

Tyler Smithpeters continued serving as an assistant coach handling the team’s day-to-day operations, including recruiting when Kyle Smithpeters resigned in April to accept a position on the staff at the University of Missouri. The Vols bring back a talented squad that has coach Smithpeters excited about leading this year’s team.

“I am excited about the opportunity to lead one of the top programs in the country, and I want to thank the Board of Trustees, Dr. Overstreet, and Greg Starrick for their faith in me,” said Smithpeters. “I am confident that with the players we have returning and the players that  have committed, we will continue the program’s success.“
