Professor of Political Science and Sociology, Dr. Jane Bryant has been named the 2019 Outstanding Full-time Faculty Member at John A. Logan College. Dr. Bryant has been teaching full-time since 2004 and holds a PhD in Political science as well as masters’ degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology.

Dr. Bryant is not only being recognized for her outstanding achievements in the classroom, but also for the effort she has gone to too allow students to see the concepts that she is teaching in the classroom in a real world setting.  Dr. Bryant has developed a number of special programs to improve student learning, civic engagement, and political knowledge. Most recently she developed the Amazing Race to the White House, an interactive game to promote presidential election engagement on the JALC Campus.  Each semester Dr. Bryant facilitates Politics in the Cinema, a special movie series that promotes American Government concepts outside of the class room.  She also is heavily involved in the College’s Constitution Day, Student Advocacy Day, voter registration drives, candidate forums, and election night parties. She is also the College’s Model Illinois Government advisor taking a group of students to the state capital each year to gain hands on experience in the legislative process.

Dean for Academic Affairs, Dr. Stephanie Chaney Hartford believe Bryant is deserving of the award because of her dedication both inside and outside of the classroom.

“Jane is not only an outstanding instructor in the classroom, but also out-of-the-classroom as well. She leads our highly successful Model Illinois Government team each year, putting in countless hours to prepare students, and they never fail to represent our College so well. Every summer semester,” said Chaney Hartford. “Jane also teaches a course, which involves taking students to Washington, D.C. to get first-hand experience with the federal government. We really value how Jane connects our students to experiences beyond the classroom. She is extremely deserving of this award.”

Bryant is both humbled and grateful for the recognition, but for her being a part of a supportive team and working together for student success is what she loves most about teaching.

“I want to thank my department chair, Matt Garrison for nominating me and my colleagues for their confidence in selecting me as the 2019 JALC Outstanding Full-Time Faculty Member,” said Bryant.  “I am honored to work along-side such a supportive group of educators as we pursue our institutional mission of student success.”

Bryant and Outstanding Part-time Faculty Member, Marva Watson will be honored at the Illinois Community College Trustee’s Association Annual Convention in Chicago, IL  on Friday, June 7, 2019.
