CARTERVILLE– John A. Logan College will present “9 to 5: The Musical,” the hilarious story of three women’s friendship, revenge, and triumph in the workplace.
Two evening performances are set for Friday, May 6 and Saturday, May 7 at 7 p.m. They will be held in Logan’s O’Neil Auditorium, and tickets for the shows are $15 for general admission and $10 for JALC students and children 12 and under.
Long-time director and performer Pam Kimball, a part-time theater and speech instructor at Logan, is directing the production.
“’9 to 5’ is set in the 1970s when some men treated women like second-class citizens in the workplace,” Kimball said. “Three ladies join forces to take down their male chauvinist boss, take over the office, and make it a better place.
“It’s very similar to the movie that came out in 1980 except it has a lot more music,” Kimball said. “Dolly Parton, who was one of the stars in the movie, wrote most of the music and it is great. The show is high-energy and a lot of fun. I think people will really enjoy it.”
Kimball has high praise for the cast.
“There are about 26 people in the show and they are amazing.” Kimball said. “The female leads are so talented, and the ensemble cast is doing a wonderful job. It’s a funny, entertaining show.”
Melissa Olsen of Carterville plays Doralee Rhodes in the show.
“My character is fun to play. She’s a sweet country girl, and it’s the role made famous by Dolly Parton in the movie,” Olsen said. “This has been a great experience for me because it’s been like a reunion. Two of the other female leads, Lori Ellis and Keisha Rafe, and I started attending John A. Logan together back in 1992. We did shows together back then, and it’s wonderful to be back on stage with them after all these years.
“It’s also a joy to work with Pam, who is an outstanding director, and the other cast members,” Olsen continued. “‘9 to 5’ is not only funny, but it also has an uplifting message that audiences will appreciate.”
