CARTERVILLE - The John A. Logan College baseball team took a pair from visiting Olney Central Monday, 9-7, in nine innings and 5-4 in eight.
With the sweep, the Volunteers finish first in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference for the second sraight season at 24-3 or one game ahead of Wabash Valley. Logan also moves to 41-9 overall.
The Vols have now won 11 league titles under the direction of head coach Jerry Halstead.
In Game 1, the Vols got an RBI double by Doug Parks followed by an RBI double from Marshall Gilbert in the first inning.
Parks stroked a second RBI double in the third along with an RBI single from Jeff Hahs.
The Vols added three runs in the fifth. Logan Kaletha had a two-run double on the heels of an RBI groundout from Ben Smith.
Olney proceeded to tie the game at 7-7 and then Hahs gave Logan the lead for good with a two-run single in the eighth.
Winning pitcher was Peyton Cypress in relief of starter Bobby Pennington and reliever Patrick McBride.
In Game 2, the game was tied 4-4 through seven innings. The Vols plated Aaron Fuller with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth on an error.
Gabe Jelley earned the win with three shutout innings in relief of starter Jerred Quartier.
"I'm extremely happy for our sophomores to win back-to-back titles," Halstead said. "We led from wire to wire and that doesn't happen very often in this league."
The Vols close out regular-season play Tuesday with non-conference games at Three Rivers.
