MARION - Marion High School senior Kodi Bell signed a letter of intent Friday to play golf at John A. Logan College this fall.

Bell did not play the game her senior year as she was recovering from knee surgery. As a junior, she shot multiple rounds in the upper 40s and low 50s, but has flashed the potential for much better scores.

Despite her lack of varsity meets, Vols head coach Bill Glenn extended a tryout to Bell and she passed with flying colors.

"I was very impressed," he said. "Kodi strikes the ball well and was extremely long off the tee. She also did a pretty good job hitting out of the bunkers. I think she can help us."

Glenn said the transition to the college game should be made easier for Bell as her Marion High teammate, Macy Kuhnke, is also a Logan recruit.

"I'm very excited to get going," Bell said. "I have grown to love golf. Sometimes, you have to chase the dreams that are in front of you."

Bell said she injured her knee playing basketball and considered a third sport - softball - to be her best sport before the injury. Now, her full focus is on the links.

"I'm going to put in the work to improve my game," she said. "I want to be able to come in this fall and be capable of shooting in the low 80s or better. And I am glad that Macy will be on the team with me. It should be a lot of fun."

Bell added that playing at Logan offers her the opportunity to be close to home, something that her family and friends will appreciate.

Glenn said he intends to sign one additional golfer.
