MOUNT CARMEL - The John A. Logan College softball team could not hold a 3-0 lead late and fell 4-3 In Game 1 of a doubleheader at Wabash Valley Monday. The Vols then dropped the nightcap, 2-0.
Logan falls to 9-5 in the Great Rivers,Athletic Conference and 17-7 overall.
In the opener, Logan took a 1-0 lead in the first when Jordyn Smith reached on an error, advanced to second on a sac bunt by Kiley Pelker, and scored on a single by Katie Sandusky.
The Vols went ahead 3-0 in the third when sophomore Kelsey Rogers lined a two-run homer to left.
After five scoreless innings, Logan sophomore pitcher Jennifer Bailey ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth.
Three singles loaded the bases. A sac fly made the score 3-1. Two more singles tied the game and one final base hit with two outs gave the Warriors rather first lead at 4-3.
Logan went down 1-2-3 in the the seventh to end the game.
Bailey was the tough-luck loser. She falls to 5-3.
In Game 2, freshman southpaw Nicole Short was brilliant, holding Wabash Valley to two runs on seven hits. She struck out four and walked three, all in the third inning.
Unfortunately, the Vols' offense was stymied. They managed six hits and could only get one runner to third base.
Rogers, and freshman Sydnee Rushing combined for four of the six hits.
"Those were two tough losses right there," said Vols head coach Angie Jilek. "We had our chances. Both Jenn and Nicole deserved a better fate. Still, I am proud of this team. We have six players either out of action or banged up yet we fought to the very end."
Logan travels to Harrisburg today to take on Southeastern in a doubleheader this afternoon.
