CARTERVILLE - The college baseball season gets under way soon, and it was learned this week that John A. Logan College sophomore Matthias Dietz has been rated as the preseason No. 1 junior college pitcher by Baseball America in its small college preview.
The 6-foot-6, 230-pound righthander from Orland Park was described in the publication as possessing "a low-90s fastball and a tantalizing slider" who has grown into his large frame.
The publication added that Dietz, an unsigned 29th-round pick of the San Francisco Giants, was "sitting 94-96 miles-per-hour and was touching 97 in fall ball, and his slider has gained some bite with the improved arm speed, as well."
Veteran Logan head coach Jerry Halstead said Dietz has worked hard to earn the recognition.
"He has made himself into an elite pitcher," Halstead said. "Although they are preseason accolades, and well-deserved, Matthias understands he is a long way from becoming a complete pitcher. We are very excited to watch his progression this upcoming season.
