CARTERVILLE – The musical talents of the all-volunteer John A. Logan College Community Band and Community Orchestra will take center stage at their fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. in the JALC conference center. The event is free and open to the public.

The orchestra will open the show with a selection of modern and classical tunes, including “Hey Look Me Over,” “Ain't Misbehavin’,” “Dancing in the Dark,” themes from “Rhapsody in Blue,” and more, as well as music from the popular TV shows “Game of Thrones” and “Outlander.”

“I try to pick a good variety of pieces when selecting music for the show,” said Murphysboro resident Bob Swearingen, a percussionist and long-time musical conductor, who is directing the orchestra.  “I choose songs that I think the musicians will enjoy playing and the audience will enjoy hearing.”

The band, led by Michael Hanes, director of bands emeritus at Southern Illinois University, will play the second set in the show, performing songs with an America flavor.

“The band’s portion of the concert has a patriotic theme,” Hanes said.  “We’ll be playing John Phillip Sousa's “Hands Across the Sea March,” “AmericanVisions” by American composer Travis J. Weller, “Echoes from the Battlefield,”which features tunes from the WWI era, Irving Berlin's “Songs For America,” and others.  It will be an entertaining set.”

Hanes said this is the first time the band and orchestra have both played in the fall concert.

“The band and orchestra share a concert together in the spring, but the band normally performs alone in the fall,” Hanes said.  “I wanted to have both groups perform this time to add a little variety to the program.”

Both groups are comprised of musicians from throughout southern Illinois.

“There are about 50 musicians in the band and around 30 in the orchestra, and they are of all ages and backgrounds,” Hanes said.  “We’re always happy to welcome new members and there’s no cost to join.  Anyone who has experience playing a band or orchestral instrument and loves music should think about joining us.”
