CARTERVILLE – Harrisburg High School graduate Casey Rose is the new assistant women’s basketball coach at John A. Logan College.

Rose graduated HHS in 2008, where he participated in basketball for four years. He spent six years with the Army National Guard, including a stint in Iraq (2011-12).

After completing his service, he earned his associate’s degree from Southeastern Illinois in 2013 and his bachelor’s in Sport Admininistration in 2014 from Southern Illinois University. He is now pursuing his master’s degree in Sports Studies at SIUC.

The 25-year-old was a graduate assistant coach for the Logan men’s team last school year and coached the AAU-affiliated Illinois Bears sixth-grade team this past summer. He was also affiliated with the Phenom-American Top 150 Coaching Clinic.

Rose said the experience he gained on the men’s side with Logan last year should help him immensely.

“I owe a lot to Coaches Kyle Smithpeters and Zach Carpenter for helping me develop my own coaching philosophy. I respect their general demeanor and appreciated their positive approach with the kids.”

Rose will now support first-year JALC women’s head coach Amanda Shelby.

“This is definitely a great opportunity for me,” he said. “Hopefully, I can help Coach Shelby turn things around.”

The Logan women finished 13-15 a season ago.

Rose said he looks forward each day to working with the freshman-dominated women’s squad.

“We only have three players with any college experience (Haley Darnell, McKena Miller and Gabrielle Sanders), but we have a lot of team quickness. I can see us playing a much more up tempo-style of game this year. I really do think it’s a good group. The sky’s the limit.”

Shelby said she is confident Rose will be a good fit with the Lady Vols.

“Casey did a great job helping the men last year as a volunteer assistant. He’s energetic, willing to learn, and has a passion for the game. I’m very excited to have him in our program.”

Rose is married to the former Heather Bethel of Harrisburg.
