Logan Media Services

CARTERVILLE – Students at John A. Logan College were invited to learn about the services available to help them succeed in school at an open house hosted this week by the Student Success Center.  The center is home to the TRiO Program, a federally funded grant aimed at helping at-risk college students, Disability Support Services, and a campus tutoring program.

Carolyn Gallegly, director of the Student Success Center, said they have open houses each semester to let everyone know about the support and assistance the center can give students.

“The mission of our office is student success, and we’re here to help students achieve their academic goals,” Gallegly said.  “When students start school, they will sometimes encounter obstacles or problems and not realize the services they need to overcome these challenges are available.  Our open houses are a good opportunity for the students to find out where we’re located, meet our staff, and learn what we can do to assist them.”

Marcie Johnson, a JALC student from Carbondale, attended the open house.

“I’m a TRiO student, and that program and the Student Success Center have been a true blessing for me,” Johnson said.  “I use the tutoring center and Math Help Room a lot, and the tutors are very helpful.  The professional staff members are great to work with and they really care about students.  They keep me going when I get discouraged.  Everyone there helps me stay motivated to do my best in school.”

Gallegly hopes students who couldn’t attend the open house will still check out the recourses the center provides.

“We welcome students to come to the center and learn more about what we have to offer and how our programs can benefit them,” Gallegly said.  “They can also visit our Web site, which has a great deal of information about our programs and services.”

Along with its three main programs, the Student Success Center conducts educational workshops throughout the year and also provides crisis counseling to students.  The center is located in C219 and office hours are 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
