CARTERVILLE, IL, July 27, 2015– “Summer Pops Concert: Music of Disney” will be presented by the John A. Logan College Community Band on Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. in Logan’s O’Neil Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public, and seating is first-come, first-served.

Murphysboro resident Bob Swearingen, a long-time musical conductor and percussionist, has been directing the band’s summer concert for 12 years.

“I’ve been a Disney fan for years,” Swearingen said.  “My son lives in Orlando and he plays in a community band there.  They did an all-Disney concert a couple years ago.  I thought that was a good idea because there’s a ton of music out there so we decided to give it a try.”

Swearingen said he believes the concert offers something for people of all ages.

“We’ll be playing music from Disney movies, TV shows, and theme parks,” he said. “We’ll feature music from recent movies such as ‘Frozen,’ ‘Saving Mr. Banks,’ which was about ‘Mary Poppins,’ and ‘Pirates of the Caribbean,’ and older movies like ‘Pinocchio.’  We’ll do the ‘Small World’ theme and opening and closing theme songs from ‘The Mickey Mouse Club.’  We believe the music will appeal to audiences both young and old.”

The band has 35 members this summer and Swearingen said it is always looking for new musicians.

“We’re an all-volunteer group with members from throughout southern Illinois who range in age from middle school to people in their 80s.  We practice at John A. Logan College every Tuesday night.  We have a good time, and I encourage anyone who has a couple years or more experience playing a band instrument to think about joining us.”
