CARTERVILLE - The Student Senate at John A. Logan College will host a presentation by Amber McKinley, a rape crisis intern with The Women’s Center in Carbondale, called “Bystander Intervention” on Wednesday, April 22, at 12 p.m. in Room B48 at the college. All students are encouraged to attend this free event.

Adrienne Barkley Giffin, director of student activities and cultural events at Logan and advisor of the Student Senate, said the presentation is part of the senate’s Sexual Assault Awareness Program.

“April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we’re holding programs on that topic every Wednesday throughout the month,” Giffin said.  “Sexual assault on college campuses is something we hear about a lot.  The students thought it was important to address this issue and raise awareness about it to prevent it from happening to our students as much as possible.”

Giffin is looking forward to hearing Smith speak.

“We have a good relationship with The Women’s Center and have worked with them on many projects over the years,” Giffin said. “I’ve met Amber before and I’m happy to have her coming to campus to teach our students what to do when they see someone being mistreated. We think her presentation will be educational and informative.”
