CARTERVILLE – Sophomore second baseman Lexi Skelton blasted a home run, two doubles and a single Thursday to lead the Rend Lake College softball team to a 7-1 decision over John A. Logan College. Game 2 of the doubleheader was called off because of rain.

The Warriors, now 9-6 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and 15-12 overall, scored one run in the second on Skelton’s solo homer; three in the third highlighted by Christa Hill’s two-run double; one in the sixth on a fielder’s choice grounder; and one in the seventh on Skelton’s RBI double.

Logan starting pitcher, freshman Jen Bailey, surrendered eight hits in her seven innings of work. She struck out four, hit one, and walked none.

Offensively, the Vols were able to do nothing of substance against Warriors’ starter, Emily Jenkins. Logan could only manage four hits, all singles. Bailey had two of the hits. Maddie Craig and Amanda Evinger had the others. Kelsey Robinson delivered the only RBI of the game, a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Vols head coach Bruce Jilek said the Warriors simply outperformed his ballclub.

“Rend Lake played well today, especially the Skelton girl,” he said. “We just couldn’t get things going. We had two runners on base in the fourth and only trailed 3-0 at the time, but their left fielder (Ashley Modglin) came in and made a real nice diving catch on a ball hit by Evinger that prevented us from scoring.”

With the loss, Logan falls to 6-5 in the league and to 11-12 overall. The Vols return to action Monday at home against Kaskaskia. Games get under way at 2 p.m.
