CARTERVILLE – Du Quoin native Kelsey Robinson has become the top power hitter on the John A. Logan College softball team this spring.

A sophomore outfielder, Robinson currently leads the team in home runs with six; runs batted in with 24; and slugging percentage at .708. She is also second in batting average at .385.

“Kelsey hits in the middle of the lineup for us and has produced,” said Vols head coach Bruce Jilek. “She has done a nice job of cutting down on her strikeouts compared to last year and has shown the ability to hit to all fields, which is reflected in her high average.”

Jilek said Robinson has also shined defensively.

“Kelsey has not committed an error in the field and has shown a strong arm this spring. She also runs the bases pretty well.  I like the fact that she brings an intensity to her game.”

Robinson said that while it’s nice to put up some good power numbers, she’s more interested in helping the Vols win games.

“I’m not hung up on numbers. As long as we win, I’m happy,” she said.

The 20-year-old, who plans to major in science and someday hopes to become an ultrasound technician, said playing softball has been a love of hers since she was little.

“Fortunately, I’ve always been able to hit,” she said. “I try not to think about too much when I go up to bat. I look for something in the zone that I know I can hit. A lot about hitting is confidence and I feel more confident now than I ever have.”

Robinson said that while she has aspirations of playing ball at a four-year school next fall, her focus remains on winning games with the Vols.

“I’ll worry about next year later. Right now, I am enjoying the game and love being around my teammates. There is a lot of talent on our team, which pushes me to be better.”
