CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College basketball team has been awarded the No. 10 seed at the 24-team Men’s National Basketball Championship for junior colleges in Hutchinson, Kansas the week of March 16.
The Volunteers will square off against No. 23 Cape Fear, North Carolina at 8:30 p.m. next Monday. The Sea Devils are 23-8 on the season, while Logan now stands 27-6.
Should the Vols win, they would take on No. 7 Northwest Wyoming at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 18. Logan would have to win four consecutive games to reach the championship, set for Saturday, March 21.
“We’re fortunate enough to have some friends who have either seen or played Cape Fear,” said JALC head coach Kyle Smithpeters. “So, we are now in the process of trying to get some game film on them.”
Smithpeters said he has given his players three days off practice to rest and recuperate from a hectic weekend of games. Practices resume Wednesday evening.
“We have a long stretch of days in between games, so we’ll work in some weight training with our practices sessions,” he said. “I like the way we’re competing right now, especially the level of intensity we have been bringing on the defensive end. If we can keep doing that, we should be OK.”
