CARTERVILLE - The musical talents of the John A. Logan College Community Band will take center stage at its annual fall concert on Sunday, Nov. 2 at 2 p.m. in Logan’s O’Neil Auditorium.  The event is free and open to the public.

Michael Hanes, director of bands emeritus at Southern Illinois University, is conducting the band.  He said the concert will include a wide range of musical compositions.

“This concert features a little bit of everything,” Hanes said.  “Every year I like to give the musicians a variety of types of music to play.  We’re doing an overture that was originally written for orchestra and is quite challenging for band called ‘La Belle Helene.’  We’re also doing a couple of marches, some tunes from popular Broadway musicals, and a few other unusual and interesting pieces.  There’s something for all musical tastes.”

Hanes said the band will be performing a special number arranged by Caleb Gomes who plays the French horn in the band.

“Caleb is a high school student from Du Quoin who has played with the band a couple years,” Hanes said.  “He heard a piece called ‘Song for the Unsung Hero’ by Joseph Martin that was originally written for chorus.  He decided to arrange it for the band to play, and he’s done a fine job with it.  It’s a very moving and emotional piece with some patriotic touches in it, and it’s working really well.”

Hanes has been directing the all-volunteer group for six years and said they are always looking for new members.

“We have about 50 musicians in the band who come from throughout southern Illinois,” he said.  “The band is open to people of all ages and backgrounds who have experience playing a band instrument.  We practice at Logan on Tuesday nights and there’s no cost to join.  We just get together because we love playing music.”
