CARTERVILLE – The John A. Logan College men’s golf team officially signed Carmi native Neal Northcott to a scholarship Tuesday.
The graduated senior was a three-time state qualifier with a 17th-place finish last fall. He was also named All-South and All-Black Diamond Conference.
Northcott holds the Carmi High School record for nine holes with a round of 30. He is a previous winner of the Junior Gold Cup in Benton with a round of 68 and has also competed in the Accelerated, Hurricane and Plantation golf tours the last four summers, as well as participating in Evansville Junior Golf.
Northcott said he is excited about coming to Logan.
“It’s an excellent golf program here,” he said. “I’ve known about Logan’s success since I was an underclassman. I see it as a great opportunity to develop my game. I can’t wait to compete at the next level.”
Northcott said he is not what he considers to be “long” off the tee, but is pretty much “straight down the fairway” with his shots.
Veteran Vols head coach Tom Ferris was excited with the signing.
“Neal is a solid golfer from Southern Illinois,” he said. “He needs to get a little bit stronger to play at our level, but I like his potential. You never know how someone is going come in here and do for sure, but once he catches up physically, I like his chances. He is a straight driver of the ball. He keeps it in play and has had success. We’ll take it from there.”
Northcott has played in the PGA Jr. Series the last four years to prepare for college golf and will be playing in the upcoming PGA Series at Kokopelli Golf Course in Marion, July 1-3.
