The Disability Support Services Coordinator is responsible for providing reasonable and approved accommodations to students with disabilities. The DSS Coordinator will also maintain communication with other staff and faculty to assure those accommodations are provided in a timely manner. This position will also collaborate with district high school’s special education professionals to provide appropriate information to bridge the gap between high school and college.
Education & Experience Requirements
Education required: Bachelor’s degree in education, Psychology, Rehabilitation Services or related field.
Education preferred: Master’s degree in education, Psychology, Rehabilitation Services or related field.
Experience required: Two years’ experience working with individuals with disabilities
Experience preferred: One year working in post-secondary education, knowledge of the American with Disabilities Act and working with individuals with accommodations.
Essential Functions & Position Duties
• Coordinate support services for students with disabilities.
• Complete the intake process for every student requesting support; review of appropriate documentation as well as making a professional judgment of appropriate accommodations.
• Oversee the provision of assistive technology, testing support and other accommodations.
• Effectively communicate with faculty members on campus to ensure the appropriate delivery of the services.
• Present information regarding the process and working with students with disabilities in large audiences to full-time and part-time faculty as well as other professionals in the college.
• Correspond with DHS, Special Education offices and high schools to facilitate the transfer of the traditional new students enter college.
• Attend IEP meetings and other related functions as appropriate to bridge the gap between high school and college.
• Provide training sessions for faculty and staff regarding ADA compliance and JALC Disability Support Services.
• Maintain student records in a confidential manner complying with all FERPA and ADA requirements.
• Maintain the student software AIM and enter all approved accommodations.
• Provide academic advisement.
Non-Essential functions of the position
• Mentor TRIO students as well as assisting in the data collection and program evaluation of the TRIO program.
• Other duties as assigned.
• Duties must be performed on the John A. Logan College campus or designated location.
