In recent years, Vice President for Instruction Dr. Julia Schroeder has been busy developing a number of programs designed to improve student learning and faculty and staff training, that has included the establishment of a Title III funded teaching and learning center, and the "Logan at 50" strategic plan. Recently, she has been busy picking up honors for her efforts. Since becoming vice-president for instruction in 2000, she has been instrumental in establishing programs to assist hundreds of displaced workers by finding mentors for the students, and reworking course offerings and programs to assist their unique time frame for completion. Dr. Schroeder has implemented innovative course delivery methods including: Financial Friday's, block-scheduling, Friday only classes, intersession classes, dual credit, and Tech Prep programs that have given students more opportunities and played a substantial role in the growth of the College. For her efforts she was recognized by her peers with two prestigious awards; the downside to such an honor, is that they were to be awarded the same week, on opposite sides of the country.
Schroeder's hectic week began as she left her weekly vice-president's staff meeting with President Mees to catch a flight to Denver, Colorado where she received a 2008 Exemplary Leader Award from the Chair Academy, an organization dedicated to exemplifying the best practices of organizational leadership worldwide. One of only 36 individuals to be recognized internationally, Dr. Schroeder and other recipients were nominated by their colleagues in recognition of their exemplary leadership practices and their commitment to their institution.
With little time to enjoy the moment, she boarded a flight for Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to receive an Instructional Leadership Award from the National Council of Instructional Administrators (NCIA), an affiliate council of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), dedicated to serving the needs of professionals involved in instructional administration in the community college. The Instructional Leadership Awards were established in 2007 and are given annually to recognize active instructional administrators who exemplify academic leadership by demonstrating creativity and innovation in their work, demonstrating a sustained commitment to instructional issues and challenges, or making a substantial impact on the college organization.
Now back at John A. Logan College, a little jetlagged and working to wrap up the semester, Dr. Schroeder is quick to give praise to faculty, staff and others. "The entire faculty and staff at the College along with President Mees and the Board of Trustees are all dedicated to serving the students in our district and should be given credit. My tremendous faculty are shining stars leading to many of the important initiatives in the Instructional Division and throughout the College," stated Schroeder.
