Readiness Alliance to Hold Inaugural Meeting at John A. Logan College

Area superintendents, school board members, high school teachers, college faculty and staff, and community leaders will converge on John A. Logan College Monday, May 5 to address college readiness of area students.

Many students are entering college unprepared for the academic rigors of college and as a result, require noncredit remedial courses to attain the skills and knowledge needed to do regular, credit coursework. Students who are required to take remedial courses will lengthen the time required to earn a degree, impose additional costs to both the student and the institution, and exhaust financial aid for courses that will not count toward a degree.

The goal of the Readiness Alliance will be to reduce the barriers to student success by aligning high school curricula with college general education courses. According to Associate Dean for Educational Programming Dr. Denise Crews this is an area of concern that educators can no longer afford not to address. "We know that there is a direct link between students being academically prepared for college and success in postsecondary education, and by taking this proactive step, we are going to help students achieve their goals more quickly while lessoning their financial burden," stated Crews. The Alliance will meet in the conference center at 5 PM prior to the College's annual Honors Night program.
