John A. Logan College sophomore Patrick Scheil of Williamsburg, Virginia, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf next year at Southern Illinois University. Scheil is the reigning Region 24 champion and he earned medalist honors in two tournaments during the Volunteers' fall campaign, compiling a scoring average of 71.

"We're thrilled to get Patrick," said Leroy Newton, head men's golf coach at SIU. "He's a great young man who comes from a good family, and he's an impact player with the talent to come here and play right away."

Scheil says he enjoys playing at Logan and is looking forward to going to SIU.

"I've learned a lot at Logan, and I'm really happy I came here," Scheil said. "I'm glad I'll have the chance to play for SIU next year. I like Coach Newton, and SIU has a really good team. I already know a lot of the guys, including my teammate from last year, Phillip Collier. I'm excited about the opportunity to play in the Missouri Valley Conference."

Before Scheil joins the Salukis, he'll play the spring season at Logan where he'll try to defend his Region 24 Tournament title and help the Vols qualify for their eighth consecutive trip to the NJCAA National Tournament.
