Lifelong, an organization comprised of community college and university educators, who provide educational programs and service opportunities for retirees, has recently announced the winners of this year's Illinois Lifelong Learning and Service Coalition Awards. John A. Logan College's Intergenerational Education Program received 1st Place for their Intergenerational Jewish Culture Study Trip and 3rd place for the quarterly intergenerational newsletter. It is the purpose of the coalition to recognize Illinois campus programs that create a welcoming environment for retirees on campuses; provide educational programming for retirees that address their interests and needs; involve retirees in campus life as mentors, guest lecturers, and in other learning and service opportunities; and establish a positive relationship between retirees and higher education.

John A. Logan College excels at providing a welcoming environment for seniors. "I think that is why the intergenerational programming has been so well-received here. The older learners enjoy being involved with our traditional students and the younger students have responded well to sharing ideas and experiences with them," according to Mabel Hayes, Director of Special Projects.

The John A. Logan College intergenerational programs include day-long study tours, conferences, short-term classes and a book discussion club that meets monthly. A black history cultural study trip to St. Louis is being planned for this fall. For more information about the intergenerational programs offered at the College, contact Mabel Hayes, Extension 8552.
