Calle Sur to Perform at Logan on January 25

Calle Sur (pronounced Kah-yeh SOOR), Spanish for "South Street," will perform at John A. Logan College on Friday, January 25, at 7 p.m. in O'Neil Auditorium. Ed East and Karin Stein make up this Panamanian-Colombian duo that uses numerous ethnic Latin American and Western instruments to express the vast cultural and musical diversity of Latin America.

In addition to the concert, East and Stein are holding a workshop called, A Musical Journey Through Latin America, in which they will demonstrate instruments and vocal styles and present an overview of Latin American geography, cultures, and folk music. The seminar will also take place on January 25 and will be held at 12 p.m. in O'Neil Auditorium.

Tickets for the concert are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and children. The cost of the workshop is $1 for the general public and free for Logan students and employees. Tickets can be purchased at the door or in advance from the Office of Student Activities and Cultural Events. Groups planning to attend the workshop must reserve seats in advance.

"Calle Sur entertains all around the world," said Adrienne Barkley Giffin, director of student activities and cultural events. "I saw them when I was at a conference last year and they put on an excellent show. We haven't had a Latin American group perform at the College in quite awhile and I think the audience will really enjoy their music. The workshop they are holding will also allow those interested to learn more about Latin America."
