CARBONDALE –Carbondale High School standout Kaili Bacon signed a letter of intent Wednesday to play basketball for John A. Logan College this fall. Bacon was the second in-district recruit newly hired Vols’ head coach Amanda Shelby signed on Wednesday.
Elverado High’s Cheyenee Abbadusky was signed earlier in the day.
“Kaili can be an inside-outside player for us,” Shelby said. “She’s quick and very athletic. I liked what I saw when I watched her play. Although only 5-foot-7, she rebounds well for her size and can also shoot the ball a little. It helps that she comes from such a fine program as the one here at Carbondale. Having played for Marialice Jenkins will certainly help make the transition to college ball easier for Kaili.”
Bacon averaged 13 points and eight rebounds a game for the Terriers this past season. She was twice selected Second Team South Seven All-Conference and was also named Honorable Mention All-South this year.
“Playing college ball is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time now,” Bacon said. “I’m very excited about it and can’t wait to meet my teammates and get started.”
Bacon said she will play wherever Shelby needs her.
“I’m a team player all the way. But it’s probably pretty safe to say that I won’t be playing the post in college.”
Jenkins said she is confident that Bacon can make the transition to collegiate ball.
“First of all, Logan is getting a terrific young lady,” she said. “And Kaili’s game has improved each year with us. She’s very athletic, quick to the basket and a great rebounder for her size. I even used her on the point of our press. And she could be pretty intimidating at times. I look for her to contribute right away at Logan.”
