CARTERVILLE - The John A. Logan College volleyball team enjoyed a successful weekend at the Rock Valley Tournament in Rockford, winning three of four matches.

The Volunteers (19-8) claimed wins over Central Lakes, one of the top-ranked schools in Division III (25-16, 25-18, 25-17); Elgin (25-11, 25-16 and 25-18); and Waubonsee (25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-21). The lone loss came at the hands of Owens Community College, ranked No. 16 in Division II (25-22, 17-25, 15-25, 18-25).

"I thought we played consistently at a high level in this tournament," said Vols head coach Bill Burnside. "Often, our performances this season have fluctuated according to the caliber of team we faced, but not this time."

Burnside said the match with Owens was a good experience for the team despite the outcome.

"We showed that we could compete at a high level with a quality opponent," he said. "The Waubonsee match was also promising. They had beaten us earlier in the season, but we came back to beat them in four games this time around. I think this shows the progress our team has made in recent weeks."

Leading the team in kills was sophomore outside hitter Audrey Vaughn with 40. Freshman outside hitter Carly Callahan followed with 28 and sophomore middle hitter Morgan Corn added 23.

Tops in blocks were freshman Kierra Nolan with 22 and Corn with 12. Tops in assists was sophomore setter Megan Martin with 102. Leading the defense in digs was sophomore libero Erin Dodd with 71. Callahan was close behind with 66. Vaughn chipped in 51 and Martin had 39.

Dodd led in service aces with eight. Vaughn notched five.

"As you can see, quite a few players contributed to our success this weekend," Burnside said. "We need to build on this performance with our final two regular season conference matches."

Logan plays host to Kaskaskia at 6:30 Wednesday.
