More than 20 JALC faculty and staff participated in a two-day workshop on developing and utilizing Faculty and Professional Learning Communities. The program was presented by Dr. Milton Cox, the Director for Teaching Effectiveness Programs at Miami University of Ohio. Dr. Cox is a noted scholar on learning communities and is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Excellence in College Teaching.

Learning communities are small groups that form to use a scholarly approach to address issues and improve teaching and learning effectiveness.

Social science chair and professor of political science, Dr. Jane Bryant, says she plans on starting a faculty learning community as early as this fall. “I plan on forming a learning community for evidence-based student learning,” said Bryant. “One of our main goals at the College is to make sure that not only are students learning, but that we can demonstrate that learning with hard data.”
