BELLEVILLE - Sara Kroeger drove in three runs, including the game winner in the seventh inning of Game 1 Wednesday as the John A. Logan College softball team took two from Southwestern Illinois, 8-5 and 9-1.

Kroeger was also pitcher of record for the Vols. She went seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. The sophomore also struck out four and walked one in improving to 5-2 this spring.

Sophomore Jessica Hirsch also swung the bat well, knocking out a double and two singles with two runs batted in.

Taylor Price, Tiffany Gaimari, Heather Johnson, and Brook Robbins added one hit each. Kaylyn Winders drove in two without the aid of a hit and Amanda Evinger also had an RBI.

Freshman pitcher Jolyn Lake continued to dazzle in the nightcap, holding the Blue Storm to one run on six hits in a game shortened to six innings due to the eight-run rule.

Lake is now 8-3 and has won seven straight. She struck out three and walked none.

With the score tied 2-2 in the seventh, Logan erupted for six runs.

With one out, Kirsten Price singled. Hirsch followed suit. Lake bunted for a single and an error on the play allowed two runs to score.

Taylor Price walked. Gaimari bunted for a hit and Anna Mansfield cleared the bases with a three-run double.

"I thought we hit the ball well today and pitched it even better," said Vols head coach Bruce Jilek. "Defensively, I thought we struggled. We need to play better, but overall, I was pleased."

Logan improves to 11-5 in the Great Rivers Athletic Conference and 16-9 overall, winners of nine straight.

The Vols host Wabash Valley at 2 and 4 p.m. today.
