SCOTTSBORO, ALA. – Sophomore Michael Mencaccy fired a 71 Thursday to help give the John A. Logan College men’s golf team the lead after one round of the Goose Pond Spring Fling tournament in Scottsboro, Ala.

As a team, the Vols checked in at 297, one stroke ahead of Faulkner State, Mississippi Gulf and Darten, Ga. There are 13 junior college teams competing altogether. Two additional rounds remain to be played.

Freshman Christian Seaton followed up Menacaccy with a 73. Freshman Adam Woolley contributed a 76. Sophomores Thomas Simpson and Connor Graves netted a 77. Competing as individuals, sophomore Brock Bolton shot a scintillating 73. Freshman Trey Brinker carded an 83 and sophomore Jack Wilson had a 91.

“We played OK. We’re still struggling on the greens,” said Logan head coach Tom Ferris. “We’re going to have to play a whole lot better over the next two days if we expect to win this tournament. Still, we are making progress. At least, the weather has been more cooperative, allowing us to get out on the course regularly.”

The tournament continues today.
