John A. Logan College welcomed Dr. Robert L. Mees of Carterville as its sixth president on June 1, 2000.  Prior to his appointment, Dr. Mees had served as Vice-President for Instruction at the College for nine years and spent ten years as superintendent of Carterville Unit 5 School District.  The first 14 years of his career were spent as a teacher and administrator in the Carbondale public school system.

Dr. Ray Hancock was named the College’s fifth president in 1989.  He came to John A. Logan College in 1974 as Associate Dean of Baccalaureate and Transfer Education.  He served as acting Dean of Instruction, executive assistant to the president, and Vice-President for Administration before assuming the presidency.

Dr. Harold O’Neil was named the College’s fourth president in 1982.  He joined the College in 1968, serving as Dean of Student Services and Vice-President for Instructional Services before assuming the presidency.

Dr. Robert E. Tarvin (1974-1982)

Dr. Robert E. Tarvin became the third president in 1975 following a one-year period as interim president.  Only 28 when he assumed the presidency, he was one of the youngest community college presidents in the nation.

Dr. Thomas E. Deem, a native of New Albany , Indiana , became the second president of John A. Logan College on August 13, 1973.

Dr. Nathan A. Ivey photograph

Dr. Nathan A. Ivey (1968-1973)

Dr. Nathan A. Ivey was selected as the College’s first president on April 2, 1968, before the school had an official name.  He moved to southern Illinois from Dowagiac , Michigan , where he had served as the charter president of Southwestern Michigan College .  He brought 20 years of experience in education with him, ten of which were in community college administration.
