John A. Logan College's Deaf Social Day - Big Success!

This year's Deaf Social Day brought participants from as far away as Missouri and the St. Louis area.  Feature events were the Dinner skits, that showed what it was like to be a part of a family where they don't communicate with you, the deaf panel, Classroom Capers, skits about humorous things that happen in an interpreted classroom, and our own Top Ten with Paul Menkis as the card throwing David Letterman.  We also had games in the afternoon.  This year we sent out an e-flyer rather than a printed flyer.  Our attendance was better this year than it has been with traditional advertising.

Click on the link to see a video clip.  This year's second year class has been involved interpreting for several events at the college.  The first event, Expressions Readings, is an annual reading of contributions to the Expressions Magazine.  All of the second year students participated.  Students also have interpreted for the High School Writing Competition, the College Writing Competition, and the Mary Logan Scholarship Awards presentation.  Students have also been paired with working interpreters in our Mentorship Program.  In some cases the students take a turn interpreting as a team with the working interpreter.  This happens at the discretion of the interpreter and is based on the setting and the readiness of the student.

Online Course Offerings to Expand
The Interpreting Program currently offers two fully online courses:  Educational Interpreting and Interpreting in the Religious Setting.  Both courses have been offered and students participated from coast to coast.  Both courses will be offered again this coming summer semester.

We are working on developing more online offerings so that working interpreters can earn a certificate of professional development by taking the series of online courses.
