Our Curriculum - History The curriculum for John A. Logan College's Interpreter Preparation Program has undergone rapid change over the last several years. Our program began in 1988 our program as a one year certificate program. Students started the program in the summer semester and finished at the end of the following summer. In 1989 we expanded to a two year program and still offered a certificate of completion. 1995 a two year Associate of Science in General Studies/Interpreter Preparation was proposed. The college was granted the degree and in 1997 our first students graduated with associate degrees. In 1999 we added two new courses for interpreters who were already working in the field. Both courses were taught online. We also added a certificate of ASL/Deaf Studies to our program offerings. A part time option was developed as well. The part time program was ideal for those people who worked. We scheduled all of our language classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and our interpreting classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Students could attend two days a week (two days and Friday mornings during the first semester of the program) and still earn a Certificate of Interpreter Preparation in three years. Many of the students taking advantage of this option work in other professions and already possess advanced degrees. In fall of 2001 we have proposed a Certificate of Interpreter Preparation Professional Development. This certificate involves taking a series of four courses (a fifth course is optional) during the summer semester. These courses are all offered online, one per summer. This certificate program is tailor made to offer working interpreters professional development opportunities. Now, in 2005 we changed from an Associate in General Studies to an Associate in Arts and Sciences. Our courses will look the same, but an AAS degree receives more recognition than an AGS degree and is more appropriate to our program. Curriculum Guides
