Paul Menkis Elected as Commission Chair

Interpreter Preparation Program

Paul Menkis, Associate Professor of Interpreter Preparation, has been elected to serve as Chairman of the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC). He is the representative from southern Illinois.
The IDHHC is working on the following mandates:
1. Develop a program to inform persons who are deaf and hard of hearing and the public of the State and local services available for the deaf and hard of hearing and make available other information of value to families, professionals, and citizens working or involved with persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
2. Cooperate with public and private agencies and local, State, and federal governments to coordinate programs for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
3. Provide technical assistance and training support to start and enhance existing programs and services for persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.
4. Evaluate State programs delivering services to deaf and hard of hearing persons to determine their effectiveness and make recommendations to public officials about future financial support to continue existing programs and establish new programs.

Students to Go to Deaf Way

IPP 2nd year students  and John A. Logan College's ASL Club are planning to attend Deaf Way II in Washington, D.C. this summer.  They have been working hard on fund raising activities to earn enough to pay for the trip.  As part of the fund raising activities this year the ASLClub has conducted a car wash, candle sales, candy sales, bake sale and kissing booth, pizza

hut fund raiser, and a catalog sale of holiday items.  There are more fundraising activities planned.
Deaf Way is an international gathering of Deaf people with over 5000 participants, 400 performers, actors, dancers, and artists, 250 conference presentations, and 200 exhibitors and vendors.
