Summer Programs

You can earn credits towards your degree of study without postponing graduation and develop skills necessary to succeed in a globalized society. Financial aid and scholarships are available to those who qualify.

Program Overview

Salzburg College is a private Austrian college situated in a 16th century townhouse in central Old City. Classes at Salzburg are taught in English by local European professors. At Salzburg College, students can study:

  • Austrian Literature & Culture
  • German Language
  • European Studies
  • Music, Art
  • Music history
  • Communication
  • Business & Marketing
  • Outdoor Pursuits (hiking, biking, rafting & skiing)

The program integrates traditional classroom instruction with practical field experiences to enhance the student’s study abroad experience. Field experiences include excursions, guest lectures, immersion activities and interaction with local Austrian professionals. Field experiences for the summer program include:

  • 4 day trip to Vienna (only breakfast included)
  • Other visits to historic and artistic sites in Austria

Cultural events in Salzburg include concerts, plays, and exhibitions. Students also have the option of participating in side trips to other locations in Europe.

Admission Requirements

This program is open to serious students, teachers, and others who have a strong interest in immersing themselves in another culture. Applicants are required to obtain a physician’s approval as part of the application process. There will be a personal interview to determine the applicant’s maturity, ability to adapt to a different environment, and function successfully as a member of the group. The successful completion of the application process is required for admission to the program. College students must also present evidence of a 2.75 GPA.

Academic Program

Students earn 6 semester hours in college credit in the summer program. Upon successful completion, these hours will be reflected on the student’s JALC transcript.

Lodging and Meals

The cornerstone of the Austrian study abroad experience is living with local Austrian families and experiencing traditional Austrian life. Assignments to families will be based on personal interviews prior to the start of the program. Meals will be provided by the host family except for lunch, which will be taken at the college.

Visa/Passport

A passport is required of all U.S. citizens to travel to Austria. U.S. citizens need a visa to travel to Austria; participants who are not U.S. citizens may need a visa to travel to France. Upon acceptance into the program, students will be provided with directions on how apply for a visa.

Orientation

A pre-departure orientation will be held prior to the start of the program. Orientation will cover important information related to safety, security, insurance and program expectations. Attendance is required. Orientation is held at Heartland Community College’ main campus in Normal, Illinois.

Program Fees

The summer program fee is $4,907, subject to change. Fees cover:

  • Instructional costs and related administrative cost at Salzburg College
  • Housing and meals in Salzburg, except during field trips and college break
  • Local excursions and social events
  • Required cultural activities
  • 4 day trip to Vienna (only breakfast included)
  • Day trip to Salzkammergut
  • HealthSelect Overseas Platinum insurance through HTH Woldrwide

In partnership with the University of Burgundy, the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP), and Parkland College, JALC students can spend five weeks of the summer abroad in Dijon, France. This program is held annually in the summer.

Program Overview

Students in this program will earn seven to eight semester hours of credit in French language and Western Humanities in France. Classes consist of lectures and discussions accompanied by field trips and activities designed to engage students in active learning and discovery. No previous study of the French language is required. In this program students will engaged with the culture of Dijon and France by exploring history, art, and local vineyards. The population of Dijon is 250,000 and is known as one of Europe’s crossroads. Dijon also host numerous museums and architectural monuments for students to visit and explore.

Admission Requirements

This program is open to serious students, teachers, and others who have a strong interest in immersing themselves in another culture. Applicants are required to obtain a physician’s approval as part of the application process. There will be a personal interview to determine the applicant’s maturity, ability to adapt to a different environment, and function successfully as a member of the group. The successful completion of the application process is required for admission to the program. College students must also present evidence of a 2.75 GPA as well as having completed 12 credit hours of college level work, including ENG 101.

Students will register for seven to eight credit hours. Upon successful completion of classes, students will receive credit on their JALC transcript. Students are required to enroll in a French language class. Classes will accommodate students at any level, from Beginning to Advanced. All classes consist of the following components: Grammar, Conversation, Reading Comprehension, Composition and Lectures.

Lodging and Meals

The students stay in a newly-renovated residence hall with a private room with bath. Private rooms include a bed, desk, closet, shelving, small refrigerator, and bedding. Additionally, a kitchen and coin operated laundry machine is located nearby the rooms.

Meals are not included in the program fee.

A passport is required of all U.S. citizens to travel to France. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to travel to France; participants who are not U.S. citizens may need a visa to travel to France.

A pre-departure orientation will be held prior to the start of the program. Orientation will cover important information related to safety, security, insurance and program expectations. Attendance is required. Orientation is held at Parkland Community College’s main campus in Champaign, Illinois.

Program Fees

The program fee is $3,300, subject to change. Fees cover:

  • Private room and bath in residence hall
  • Instructional cost at the University of Burgundy
  • Textbooks
  • 20+hours of language instruction per week
  • Illinois faculty member liaison
  • Field trips and excursions, most entrance fees included
  • Ground transportation: Paris>Dijon
  • Paris tour on arrival day
  • Group dinner & 2 nights lodging in Paris

In partnership with the Illinois Consortium for International Studies and Programs (ICISP), the College of DuPage and the Costa Rican Language Academy, JALC students can spend the summer abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica. Explore the capital of Costa Rica through this unique immersion program. San Jose is the heart of Costa Rica and home to numerous theaters, museums, galleries, and other cultural gems. Costa Rica is an environmentally diverse country known for its rainforests.

Program Overview

Students in this program will earn seven semester hours of credit in Spanish language and culture of Costa Rica. Classes consist of lectures and discussions accompanied by field trips and activities designed to engage students in active learning and discovery. No previous study of the Spanish language is required. Participants will live with local host families in San Jose and have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the Costa Rican lifestyle and culture. A faculty member from an ICISP institution will accompany the student group to Costa Rica.

Admission Requirements

This program is open to serious students, teachers, and others who have a strong interest in immersing themselves in another culture. Applicants are required to obtain a physician’s approval as part of the application process. There will be a personal interview to determine the applicant’s maturity, ability to adapt to a different environment, and function successfully as a member of the group. The successful completion of the application process is required for admission to the program. College students must also present evidence of a 2.75 GPA. If an applicant has special needs, the program will attempt to make whatever reasonable accommodations are possible, but as in many developing countries, it may be difficult to travel in Costa Rica.

Academic Program

Students are required to register for the two required classes. Upon successful completion of classes, students will receive credit on their JALC transcript. Students are required to enroll in a Spanish language class and a Costa Rican culture class. Program courses include:

  • Spanish (4 credits)
  • Culture and Civilization of Costa Rica (3 credits)

Prior to the beginning of classes, all students will be assessed in Spanish language proficiency and placed at the appropriate level.

Lodging and Meals

The cornerstone of the Costa Rican study abroad experience is living with local Costa Rican families and experiencing traditional Costa Rican life. Homestay may include double occupancy rooms. They will be provided with breakfast, dinner, and laundry service during the homestay period. This arrangement provides the opportunity for the student to continue practicing Spanish and to share the everyday life of the “ticos”. Families are chosen for their friendliness and helpfulness. Except in remote areas, the water in Costa Rica is drinkable. The homes are near public transportation. A few may be within walking distance to class. Lunch is not provided but there are many excellent places to eat.

A passport is required of all U.S. citizens to travel to Costa Rica. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to travel to Costa Rica; participants who are not U.S. citizens may need a visa to travel to Costa Rica.

Attendance is required. Orientation is held at College of DuPage’s main campus in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. This typically occurs over two days in May.

Program Fees

The program fee is $3,099, subject to change. Fees cover:

  • Round-trip airfare from Chicago
  • Five-week double-occupancy home stay
  • Breakfast, dinner, and laundry service
  • Field trips and excursions
  • Hotel accommodations on overnight excursions
  • Instructional costs
  • Textbooks for the language classes
  • Transfer to and from the airport in San Jose

Fees do not cover:

  • Passport
