Dr. Stephanie Chaney Hartford is an instructor of speech and has been at John A. Logan College since 1997. Her career began in educational administration where she served as a student advisor. She then worked in the College’s Foundation and coordinated annual giving activities and the College’s alumni program. Upon completion of her doctoral degree, Dr. Hartford began teaching speech at John A. Logan College as a term faculty member before becoming a full-time instructor. In addition to faculty duties, she serves as an academic advisor for the Humanities department and is the coach of a newly formed forensic team at the College. Dr. Hartford teaches courses in public speaking, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and advanced public speaking.
Committees that Dr. Hartford currently serve on are the scholarship committee and the recruitment and retention committee. She is also involved in the Higher Learning Commission’s accreditation process and has served on nominal groups in the College’s assessment program. She is a member of the Illinois Speech and Theater Association and the National Communication Association.
Dr. Hartford began her education at a community college. She is an alumni of Southeastern Illinois College (1993) where she attended on an academic scholarship and forensic team scholarship. She holds a B.S. (1995) in speech communication with a specialization in public relations and a M.S.Ed. (1997) in college student personnel from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Her Ph.D. (2001), also from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, is in speech communication with a concentration in organizational communication. Her research areas includ leadership and credibility, conflict, and instruction using the case study methodology.
