Kathleen Carl’s Biography
I came to southern Illinois in 1975 to attend SIU and, like so many others, fell in love with the natural beauty of the area. After completing Bachelors’ degrees in English and History, I moved to Austin, Texas and earned a Master’s in English from the University of Texas. Returning to southern Illinois, I completed coursework in Speech Communication and began teaching at John A. Logan College in 1990.
Currently, I teach all aspects of communication. I am primarily a writing teacher, or more accurately, a writing coach. English Composition I and II offer opportunities to help guide students as they increase their writing proficiency. Literature courses, including Mythology, help students understand themselves and their world in new ways, which they express through journal writing, small group activities, and a variety of written and oral projects.
Online teaching has provided new insights into teaching, from the ways we present material to the ways we assess or evaluate student learning. It has been intriguing and rewarding to teach Literature for Children, Mythology and composition online, and to share new methods with my colleagues who teach online.
