Classes can be arranged for instruction to take place at the business site. Most courses are free of charge. Sample course schedules are included after the course descriptions.

Due to rapid changes in safety equipment technology and accident prevention guidelines, employers are requiring employees/potential employees to upgrade their safety skills. This course will give employees/students a thorough understanding of accident prevention guidelines.

This course introduces students to the applications of ergonomic principles for the reduction of stress and strain to an employee's body and the control of workplace musculoskeletal and nerve disorders.
Course Outline:

  • Describe the impact of job and workplace design on employee safety and health
  • Identify workplace characteristics that may contribute to cumulative trauma disorders
  • List improvements in job, workstation, and equipment design that can reduce injuries

This course concentrates on the basics of back safety, prevention of back injuries, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The major factors contributing to back injuries are discussed and risk reduction measures are detailed.

Slips, Trips, and Falls
This course covers safeguards and procedures for working on various walking surfaces. Special emphasis is placed on the frequency of slip, trip, fall type injuries and common causes of hazards. This offers a common sense approach to prevention and control in order to reduce injury and increase employee awareness.
Course Outline:

  • Describe the factors that cause slip, trip, and fall type injuries
  • Discuss the requirements for safety when working from heights or on elevated surfaces
  • Explain the necessity for good housekeeping standards

This training covers hazard recognition, safe use of electrical tools and appliances, electrical fire prevention, and control and treatment of electrical shock.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
A comprehensive program that covers specific protective equipment needed in today's industrial setting. The course illustrates the importance of proper selection, wear, and storage of PPE. All aspects of protective equipment are discussed and hands-on training is included. Fit testing is conducted according to requirements.

Drug Awareness/Substance Abuse

This basic awareness course discusses the various diseases commonly transmitted through blood or bodily fluid contact, the modes of transmission, standard precautions, and personal protective equipment (PPE) safety when working in environments that may lead to transmission.

Powered Industrial Truck Training
This involves operational training that utilizes classroom and supervised practice for the purpose of certifying employees on the use of a variety of powered industrial trucks. This program is flexible and efficient, introducing the safe operation of fork trucks, scissor lifts, boom lifts, Bobcats, and other forms of industrial vehicles.
Course Outline:

  • Theory on safe operation of powered industrial trucks
  • Reviews of accidents and injuries resulting from use of powered industrial trucks
  • Written examination on the theory portion
  • Practical examination on the actual operation of the particular truck

The Center for Business and Industry offers an extensive program of compliance-based training in the area of hazardous waste material handling. The offerings range from the extensive 40-hour Hazwoper training to an 8-hour refresher. Hazardous material handling courses range from basic courses as specified under HM-126F/HM-181 to first responder awareness training. The basic emergency response training and 24-hour hazardous material technician courses are also offered.

Various training programs are available for asbestos awareness and abatement.
