The Center for Business and Industry has been in existence since August, 1992. The center was established solely to present a new approach to help area businesses and industries with their training/retraining needs. The center is devoted to training the unemployed, underemployed, and currently employed needing retraining and job upgrading courses and programs. The center is capable of delivering "customized" training to area employers and their employees using John A. Logan College instructors, staff, and consultants. Training can be held either on-site at the place of business or on the John A. Logan College campus.

Some of the educational programs and services the Center provides are:

  • Customized training programs geared to specific business and industry needs;
  • Special needs projects or consulting services;
  • Identifying and developing educational programs needed for emerging occupations;
  • Planning and coordination of conferences, seminars, and workshops developed for area businesses, organizational groups, and governmental agencies dealing with work force topics or events.
  • Catering services through Chartwells.  Click here to download Chartwells menu as a PDF file.  If you need Adobe Acrobat Reader, click here for your free copy.

The most important aspect to remember is that all services and training are "customized" to meet your needs. When planning a workshop, an instructor or representative from the center will meet with you and discuss your needs. This includes the location where the topic will be taught, length of the program, content included in the presentation, time the workshop is to take place, and whether college credit is to be issued to your employees. This initial consultation is provided free of charge. If an agreement is met, the instructor designs the training program according to your wishes. In most cases there are no preparation charges. The College bills you for the training after it has been completed.

The most impressive outcomes of the center have been its rate of growth and quality of instruction. The first year the center came into existence in 1993, 2,270 persons were trained in various programs. From July 2004 to June of 2005, over 15,000 people received training or services. The center boasts a very high satisfaction rating from the business clients it serves. Many employees who receive training or services from the center complete an evaluation tool that is designed to rate our effectiveness. In FY 2005 over 3,500 participants completed one such instrument.

The following illustrates a portion of the results:

  • 91% had an above average or excellent overall impression of their instructor.
  • 90% rated their course/workshop as above average or excellent in terms of improving job/personal skills.
  • 93% stated that the courses/workshops offered are a valuable asset to the area and its needs.
  • 93% stated that they would attend another course/workshop in the future if the subject matter was appropriate.

From July of 2004 to June of 2005, the Center provided over 800 courses to over 130 different businesses. During 1997 it received an award from the Jackson County Business Development Corporation as the public entity that was the most helpful to business and industry.

In October of 2004, the Center for Business and Industry was recognized nationally for its economic development efforts. The Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT), based in Washington, D.C., an non-profit educational organization of governing boards, representing more than 6,500 elected and appointed trustees who govern over 1,200 community, technical and junior colleges in the United States, Canada, and England gave John A. Logan College a Best Practice in Community Economic Development award. The award recognizes exceptional programs and services that encourage economic development in a given community college district. Along with receiving the award, a contingent from the College administration and Board of Trustees was asked to speak in New Orleans during the the (ACCT) 2004 Leadership Congress in October of that same year.

The Center for Business and Industry has enjoyed many accolades derived from its quality programs and services it provides to the community.

The following quotes from clients, local officials and economic development professionals illustrate how the Center's quality is viewed:
