Computer workshops may be purchased on a course-by-course basis. The Center for Business and Industry can customize a course to meet the needs of a business. Businesses may choose beginning, intermediate, or advanced levels. The length of the workshop and the content may be customized. Training may be conducted at a John A.
Logan College computer lab or on site (if appropriate). The cost will be based on a per hour charge.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

BASIC PC AND OPERATING SYSTEMS

BIN 113 Introduction To Personal Computers 0.5 Credits
This is an introduction to the components that make up a personal computer system. The class will discuss the hardware, software, and functions of these components in using the computer. Students will gain information about the use of personal computers and some software packages commonly used on PCs.

BIN 114 Introduction To Windows 0.5 Credits
This is an introduction to the Windows operating system. The class will explore many of the basic operations of the computer using Windows. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

BIN 162 Microsoft Windows (Adv.) 0.5 Credits
This course will provide students with the basic skills necessary for more advanced use of Microsoft Windows. Concepts related to running more than one program at a time, copying data to the clipboard in one application and retrieving into a different application, as well as more advanced features of the Windows Explorer and Control Panel will be emphasized.

BIN 710 AS/400 0.5 Credits
New system operators learn skills for the day-to-day operation of an AS/400 system. This course explains how to start and end the system, use messages, monitor and control jobs, output, and devices, and resolve system problems.

BIN 710 MS Office Upgrade 0.5 Credits
This course is designed to assist users of other word processing and spreadsheet programs to convert to MS Office products.

BIN 710 Microsoft Office (Beg.) 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to introduce the student to the Microsoft Office software package. The basic skills needed to develop, save, edit, and print will be emphasized.

BIN 710 Daily Troubleshooting For The PC 0.5 Credits
This course is designed to locate and fix commonly occurring problems that PC users meet on a day-to-day basis. It is designed as a non-technical course to identify fixable problems. Some of the topics covered will be computer lockups, viruses, installing and removing software and hardware, file clean up, daily maintenance, software troubleshooting, creating a startup disk, and changing Windows settings.

BIN 710 Basic Networking 0.5 Credits
This course is designed to cover the basics of computer networking for employees that are not considered to be at a highly technical level.

BIN 147 cc:Mail ForWindows 0.5 Credits
This introductory course will prepare students to use electronic mail in an organized setting. Concepts of electronic mail will be emphasized, as well as a functional overview of Lotus cc: Mail for Windows. Students will gain hands-on experience with cc: Mail during class time.

BIN 213 Lotus Notes 0.5 Credits
Students will be introduced to the concept of groupware and how to use Lotus Notes for various communication functions.

BIN 182 Basic Microsoft Project 0.5 Credits
In organizations of all sizes, computerized project management is used to define costs, compute costs, and track complex projects. Basic MS Project will impart necessary skills to set up and manage organizational projects using this software.

BIN 706 Integrated MS Office 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to show the attendee how to manage an entire project incorporating a number of employees using a “master document” profile. The course will deal with importing and exporting various “App Documents” and the linking and sharing of the documents within a shared environment.

BIN 710 Crystal Reports 0.5 Credits
This introductory course will provide students with the basic skills necessary for the effective use of Crystal Reports. Students will gain hands-on experience through the actual use of the program during class time.

A presentations class, designed for teachers, that incorporates the basic skills of building a presentation, learning PowerPoint, and integrating multimedia. Teachers will be expected to arrive at class with a presentation idea/lesson plan, etc., that they want to develop. Supplemental materials can also be brought, i.e., pictures, CD’s, videos, etc. Students will leave class with a completed presentation.

BIN 703 Internet And Email 0.5 Credits
This course will prepare students to use electronic mail and Internet in an organizational setting. Concepts of e-mail will be emphasized, as well as a functional overview of the Internet. Students will gain hands-on experience during class time.

BIN 704 Internet II 0.5 Credits
The dynamics of today’s workplace dictate the need for more information with less time available for traditional research methods. Upon course completion, students will be able to enhance data retrieval by utilizing search engines and web browsers, communicate by e-mail and Internet groups, and manipulate data through downloading and saving files.

BIN 701 Web Authoring I 3 Credits
This course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to create, publish, and maintain a web site. The primary focus of the course will be on basic HTML code and good design principles.

BIN 702 Web Authoring II 3 Credits
This course is designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to maintain and modify a web site. The primary focus of the course will be on advanced HTML code and incorporating programming code.

BIN 180 Netscape ForWeb Authoring 0.5 Credits
This introductory course will provide students with the basic skills necessary to create web pages using Netscape Communicator software. Students will learn all major elements of basic web page design, organization, and authoring through hands-on experience.

BIN 214 Web Page Design 0.5 Credits
This introductory course will provide students with the basic skills necessary to create web pages using a current web page development software package. Students will learn all major elements of basic web page design, organization, and authoring through hands-on experience.

BIN 133 Lotus 1-2-3: Beginning 0.5 Credits
Lotus 1-2-3 is a commonly-used spreadsheet software used by business and industry. The class begins with an overview of why spreadsheets are so useful in business and provides experience with the types of application for which they are commonly used. Examples of applications include payroll, inventory, accounting, and taxes, to name a few. This course is organized to allow participants to gain experience with designing spreadsheets and creating charts. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

BIN 134 Lotus 1-2-3: Intermediate 0.5 Credits
Many tasks performed with Lotus 1-2-3 require skills beyond those covered in an introductory class. This class is designed to impart additional skills to those who already possess a basic understanding of spreadsheet concepts and are able to create simple spreadsheets in Lotus 1-2-3. This skill set will be particularly useful to information workers, allowing them to be more productive and valuable. Students will gain hands-on experience through use of the program during class time.

BIN 135 Lotus 1-2-3: Advanced 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to take the student beyond the capabilities of developing a basic spreadsheet. The student will learn to develop charts and work with multiple applications. Dynamic linking and databasing will be covered. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

BIN 165 Microsoft Excel (Beg.) 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to introduce the student to the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet software package. The basic skills needed to build, save, edit, and print a spreadsheet will be emphasized. BIN 176 Quattro Pro (Beg.) 0.5 Credits
This workshop is intended to introduce the student to the Quattro Pro spreadsheet software program. The basic skills needed to build, save, edit, and print a spreadsheet will be emphasized. Developing basic formulas and spreadsheet formatting will be covered. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

BIN 136 Quicken 0.5 Credits
This course will provide you with basic skills necessary for the effective use of the finance program Quicken. Students will gain experience with the program through hands-on training during class time.

BIN 700 QuickBooks 2003 (Beg.) 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to introduce the student to the QuickBooks 2003 Pro software package. The basic skills needed to automate small business operations such as invoicing, bill paying, inventory management and analyzing financial data will be covered.

BIN 700 QuickBooks 2003 (Int.) 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to enhance the skills of those that already possess a basic understanding of QuickBooks 2003 Pro concepts. The skills covered in the intermediate class will be entering sales and invoices, entering and paying bills, analyzing financial data and setting up inventory.

BIN 712 QuickBooks 2003 (Adv.) 0.5 Credits
This course is intended to take the student beyond the capabilities of automating small business operations. The student will learn to set up tax rates and agencies along with setting up payroll.

Learn how to “dress up” your business documents with desktop publishing. This course will train you on the essentials of desktop publishing using graphics, tables, fonts, columns, and special effects. Using these features increases the attractiveness and readability of newsletters, and directories, and even your letters and reports. Also, students will learn how to maximize the use of a laser printer. Sample documents will be provided.

This course is designed to give you an understanding of special topics and features of Word Perfect. It has been designed for those who possess a good understanding of the basics of Word Perfect. Some of the features covered are for the advanced user. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

BIN 111 Word Pro (Beg.) 0.5 Credits
This introductory course will provide students with the basic skills necessary for effective use of the Word Pro word processing software. An overview of the application as well as the basic terms and operations associated with it will be emphasized. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

BIN 181 Word Pro (Int.) 0.5 Credits
This comprehensive, multi-functional package is used by a wide variety of office professionals - from CEOs to entry level personnel who process most of the documents found in today’s business. Learn to use the software that you already own and is part of your office. This course is designed to give you an understanding of the intermediate functions and features of Word Pro. Students will gain hands-on experience through the use of the program during class time.

A+ CERTIFIED SERVICE TECHNICIAN
The Center for Business and Industry at John A. Logan College is offering A+ Certified Service Technician – a 42-hour course that covers material found on both the Core A+ (hardware) certification test and the A+ Operating System Technologies exam. This course provides you with the hands-on experience and skills development necessary to install, service, and support microcomputers.

NETWORK+ CERTIFICATION
The Center for Business and Industry at John A. Logan College is offering Network+ Certification – a CompTIA vendor neutral certification that measures the technical knowledge of network professionals with 18-24 months experience in the IT industry. The test is administered by NCS/VUE Prometric. Earning the Network+ Certification means that the candidate possesses the knowledge needed to configure and install the TCP/IP client. This exam covers a wide range of vendor and product neutral networking technologies that can also serve as a prerequisite for vendor-specific IT certifications.

In this course, students will learn the layers of the OSI models, will be able to describe the features and functions of network components, and have the skills needed to install, configure, and troubleshoot basic networking hardware peripherals and protocols.
