Bill Burnside – Head Volleyball Coach
Coach Burnside has now completed 3 years as a Head Volleyball Coach here at John A Logan College. During those 3 seasons, the program has compiled a 70-31 overall record, and a 21-3 GRAC Conference mark. The team has been NJCAA Region 24 DI Champions for all 3 of those seasons (2009, 2010, 2011), and has won the GRAC Conference for the past 2 (2010 & 2011). Coach Burnside is a 3-time NJCAA Region 24 Coach of the Year, and a 2-time GRAC Coach of the Year.
Prior to accepting the Head Coaching position here at Logan, Coach Burnside spent 4 years as Head Coach for Lambuth University in Jackson, TN. During his tenure there, the team progressed from a struggling 6-26 before his arrival, to 23-19 in 2005 and 20-15 in 2006. While at Lambuth, Coach Burnside also was a Head Tennis Coach, and an instructor within the PE Department where he taught Sport Psychology, Lifetime Wellness, Tennis, and Volleyball.
Before taking the position at Lambuth University, Coach Burnside spent 7 seasons here at Logan as an Assistant Coach working with Coach Fay Ragan. During their tenure together, the Vols reached an all-time high with 2 NJCAA DII National Tournament appearances. This included an 8th place finish in 2000, and a 7th place finish in 2002.
Overall, Coach Burnside has 14 years of experience coaching at the collegiate level. In addition to this, he has coached men's club teams (University of Delaware 1992-1995), Juniors Clubs in Southern Illinois, and worked collegiate camps at Southern Illinois University, University of Illinois, and here at John A Logan College.
As a player, he played for the University of Delaware for 3 seasons, and participated in adult USAV competition for over 20 years. He played at the highest men's levels available regionally, and was a member of the 2001 Gateway Region Men's Championship Team (based in St Louis, MO).
In the past, he has also been a Gateway Regional Referee, and earned a USAV CAP Level II Certification.
Coach Burnside has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History (university of Delaware) and a Master of Science in Physical Education (Southern Illinois University). His wife Penny is a teacher at Lewis School in Carbondale, and they have a 5 year old daughter, Kara Leann.
