Jane Minton’s Biography

Jane Minton has served John A. Logan College in many capacities since returning to Illinois in 1977. She began teaching continuing education classes in the summer of 1978, then adult education classes in the fall of 1987. She became the Public Assistance Coordinator in 1988, her first full-time position with the College. A year later, while still in that position, she became an academic advisor. In 1990 she began teaching HUM 152 (Death and Dying) and PSY 132 (General Psychology) in addition to her full-time duties. In January of 1997, Jane moved into the full-time advisor/counselor position in the federal TRiO program. In January of 2009 she became a core advisor in the Admissions Office, then advanced to Director of Academic Advisement in August of that year.

Before coming to John A. Logan College, Jane was Training Director for Shagbark Girl Scout Council.

Jane has earned two bachelor of arts degrees, one in Business Administration from the University of Maryland, Far East Division and another in Psychology from McKendree University. She has a master’s degree in Gerontology/Aging Studies from the University of South Florida where she earned membership in Phi Kappa Phi. She has done advanced graduate study in Psychology at Southern Illinois University and in Education at the University of Central Florida.

Having had a rather rocky start in college, Jane is passionate about the role of the academic advisor in student success. With her former boss, Cheryl Thomas, Jane authored Intrusive Advisement: A Model for Success at John A. Logan College which was published by the University of Illinois Office of Community College Research and Leadership in the spring 2004 edition of their newsletter.

Jane is a member of NACADA, the National Academic Advising Association and IACAC, the Illinois Association for College Admission Counseling.

In her non-work time, Jane’s interests lie in cooking, photography, gardening, and electronic media.
