JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE ASSESSMENT AND PLACEMENT

Purpose: To evaluate the student's present strengths and needs for advisement and successful placement in English, Mathematics, and Reading courses.

What is an ASSET or COMPASS? ASSET stands for Assessment of Skills for Successful Entry and Transfer. COMPASS stands for Computerized Adaptive Placement Assessment & Support System. ASSET and COMPASS are assessment tools of academic skills. They are used as a means to gather information regarding the background, educational needs, and goals of students. A low ASSET or COMPASS score will not keep anyone from attending college. By participating in an ASSET or COMPASS test, students may build a solid plan for success in the education options they choose to pursue at JOHN A. LOGAN COLLEGE. Special preparations are not necessary as the assessments are designed to measure skills acquired through high school, work experience, or previous college work.

Who must take the ASSET or COMPASS Assessment before registration?

  1. All first time college students.
  2. Transfer students without a college transcript.
  3. Transfer students with a college transcript that does not indicate a successful completion of college Eng. or Math course.

(ASSET/COMPASS assessment must be taken before registration).

Who is exempt?

  1. Students who have earned a college degree (Associate and above).
  2. ASSET/COMPASS assessment not required if proof is shown verifying ASSET/COMPASS scores given at a high school.
  3. Students with passing grades in college-level English courses and college Level Math courses.
  4. Students who have undergone ASSET/COMPASS assessment at another college or university and have transferred their scores.
  5. Students enrolling only in ALH 101, ALH 102, ALH 103, TRT 152, PED 100 or 103, EMT 111.

*Students needing any reasonable accommodations because of a disability or learning problem should contact Christy McBride special Needs Coordinator, or Director of Student Academic Success Services.
