| To successfully complete this program, the student must be in good health and without any medical or physical restrictions. This is necessary because of the required skills that must be learned and demonstrated in clinical and lab settings. The student is required to present proof of a current TB skin test or screening and may be required to provide a medical release from a physician.
Admission Requirements
In order to enter this program, the student must meet these requirements:
- Be at least 16 years of age
- Complete the pre-entrance testing: COMPASS test score of 30 or better on Reading Skills OR ASSET test score of 28 or better on Reading Skills
- Fulfill admission requirements for John A. Logan College
- Negative 2-Step TB Skin Test (These tests may be taken at a local health department. If a student has any physical restrictions, including pregnancy, they must obtain a signed release form from their physician allowing full participation.)
Students are selected on a first-come, first-served basis.

Class Information
John A. Logan College offers this course twice each fall and spring semesters. The first class starts at the beginning of each semester and lasts for eight weeks, followed by a second class also lasting eight weeks.
The classes meet from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. four days each week (Tuesday-Friday). Classes are held on the John A. Logan College campus two days and at various clinical sites (area nursing homes) two days.
The course is seven (7) credit hours.
Tuition and Fees
Tuition fees for this course are approximately $427.00.
The textbook required for the course costs approximately $53.00.
A testing cost of $50.00 must be paid by the third week of the course. A processing fee of $15.00 must be paid on the first day of class for the required Illinois Criminal Background Check. Students are required to bring a money order payable to SIUC in the amount of $15.00 to class on this day.
After you have registered for the CNA course, pay close attention to fee due dates. If you are dropped from the CNA course for non-payment of fees, you automatically forfeit your position from the program and will be replaced. FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH INDIVIDUAL STUDENT. The CNA course DOES NOT QUALIFY for Federal or State grants or loans.
Objectives
Upon completion of this training program and passing the Nurse Aide Competency Exam, the student will be listed on the Illinois Nurse Aide Registry as a certified nursing assistant and as such will be able to do the following:
1. Perform quality nursing care under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse or physician, including bathing, shaving, grooming, toileting, and feeding patients.
2. Accurately measure vital signs, height, and weight.
3. Promote and maintain medical asepsis and a safe environment for one's self and the patient.
4. Communicate effectively with patients, family, and members of the health care team.
5. Describe basic human anatomy and disease entities affecting different body systems.
6. Identify the principles of rehabilitation and demonstrate proper techniques of caring for a patient in a restorative nursing program.
