  • To help with your child’s homework,
  • To read better, or
  • To learn to speak and write English

A volunteer tutor working one–on–one with a student.

You may qualify if you are an adult 16 years of age or older, out of school and living in the John A. Logan College district and need help with basic skills. (JALC district includes: Williamson, Jackson and parts of Franklin, Perry and Randolph counties)

What Services are Provided to Students?

The Adult Volunteer Literacy project provides tutoring services to adults who need to improve their basic reading, writing, math and language skills.

When and Where are Services Provided?

Services are provided year round and the schedule is based on learner/tutor availability. Tutoring is provided at a variety of community settings within the John A. Logan College district such as the local library, churches, and ABE/GED classrooms.

How are Students and Tutors Matched?

We take our time to insure good matches. We consider schedules, personal preferences, strengths and special needs, personalities, and our own intuition and experience. Sometimes it doesn’t work out on the first try. We learn from the experience and then try again.

Who Do I Contact to Find Out About Services?

In order to better serve our students, we have five literacy offices throughout the college district: Carterville, Elkville, Marion, Murphysboro and West Frankfort. We offer services in most communities in the college district. To locate a literacy staff person in your area, please return to the Literacy Program Homepage and click on Who Do I Contact?
